Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Appoints New Chief of Staff, Mitch Kamin

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced the appointment of Mitch Kamin as her new chief of staff, marking the third person to hold this position in her nearly three years as mayor. Kamin, a seasoned lawyer with a strong background in fighting for the rights of underserved communities, will bring his expertise to the role, which has seen a more rapid turnover than in previous administrations.

Kamin’s appointment was announced in a press release, where Mayor Bass described him as a “seasoned leader and status quo disrupter.” With decades of experience as an executive at nonprofits and legal services organizations, Kamin has a proven track record of making a positive impact in his community. He has also served on several city commissions, including the commission that oversees the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, which he was appointed to by former Mayor Eric Garcetti in 2016.

Kamin’s Background and Experience

Kamin, a graduate of Harvard Law School, has worked as a partner at the law firm Covington & Burling LLP, where he helped recruit for the firm’s first Los Angeles office and co-chaired the global commercial litigation practice group and the entertainment and media industry group. He has also served as president of Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to those in need. Most recently, he was general counsel and chief strategy officer for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a project of “Star Wars” creator George Lucas.

Kamin’s experience fighting against the Trump administration’s immigration policies will be an asset in his new role, as the administration continues its immigration crackdown in Los Angeles and across the country. During Trump’s first term, Kamin represented the city in a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, preventing the federal government from requiring cooperation with immigration enforcement as a condition of receiving grant money.

Reaction to Kamin’s Appointment

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who worked with Kamin at Covington & Burling LLP, praised Kamin’s appointment, saying, “Mitch is a passionate, committed and compelling leader.” Kamin’s experience and expertise will undoubtedly be valuable assets to Mayor Bass’s office, and his appointment has been welcomed by many in the community.

Kamin will replace Carolyn Webb de Macias, who has led the mayor’s office since November 2023. He will start his new job on September 22, and Mayor Bass has expressed her full support for him, saying, “Mitch has my full support and mandate to lead this team and to maximize our effectiveness and performance.”
