Mexican Cartel Leader “El Gato” Faces New Federal Indictment and Possible Death Penalty
Jose Rodolfo Villareal-Hernandez, also known as “El Gato,” a notorious Mexican cartel leader, has been hit with a fifth superseding indictment by federal prosecutors. The charges against him include conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, interstate stalking, and continuing a criminal enterprise, all of which are connected to the 2013 murder of a man at a Southlake shopping center.
Villareal-Hernandez, who was once one of the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives, is accused of orchestrating the murder of Juan Jesus Guerrero Chapa, a lawyer for a rival cartel, as part of a long-held plot of revenge. According to Paul Coggins, former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Villareal-Hernandez ordered the hit to eliminate one of the men responsible for his father’s death, which was allegedly carried out by a rival drug cartel.
The 2013 Murder and Its Aftermath
In May 2013, Guerrero Chapa was gunned down while sitting in his vehicle at the Townsquare shopping center in Southlake. He had been shopping with his wife at the time of the incident. The violent crime sent shockwaves through the community, and now, 12 years later, Villareal-Hernandez is facing justice.
Although others were convicted in connection with the murder, Villareal-Hernandez remained on the run for years. He was finally arrested in Mexico in 2023 and extradited to the U.S. in February. The case highlights the lengths to which the federal government will go to pursue justice in murder cases, particularly those involving organized crime.
Legal Implications and Possible Death Penalty
Coggins noted that if Villareal-Hernandez is found guilty of the murder-for-hire charge, he could be eligible for the death penalty. The sentencing process would involve a special hearing where the jury would consider various factors, including whether the defendant intended to kill someone and whether the act was premeditated.
