Investigation Underway After Mexican Man Dies in ICE Custody at Arizona Detention Center

A 32-year-old man from Mexico, identified as Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a detention center in Arizona. According to ICE, Vargas was being held at the Central Arizona Correctional Complex in Florence and was pronounced dead by a doctor at the Mountain Vista Medical Center near Phoenix on the morning of August 31. The cause of death remains unknown and is currently under investigation.

Vargas, a citizen of Mexico, had been arrested by Flagstaff police on August 2 and charged with possession and use of drug paraphernalia, a felony offense. He was taken into custody by ICE agents in Phoenix before being transferred to the detention center in Florence. According to ICE, Vargas had been arrested at least twice before by Flagstaff police, with convictions for driving under the influence in 2018 and 2024, resulting in a sentence of 10 days in confinement for the latter offense.

ICE Response and Investigation

ICE has stated that its agents notified the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Office of Inspector General, and the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility of Vargas’ death, as required by agency policies. The Mexican Embassy was also notified. In a statement, ICE emphasized its commitment to providing safe, secure, and humane environments for all individuals in its custody, including comprehensive medical care from the moment of arrival throughout their stay.

However, the incident has raised concerns about the treatment and care of detainees in ICE custody. This is the 14th reported death at an immigration detention center in the U.S. since the beginning of the year, according to ICE. The agency has not provided an immediate update on the investigation into Vargas’ death, despite being contacted by CBS News for further information.

Context and Implications

The death of Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas highlights the need for increased transparency and accountability in the treatment of individuals in ICE custody. As the investigation into his death continues, it is essential to examine the circumstances surrounding his detention and the care he received while in custody. The incident also underscores the importance of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, are treated with dignity and respect, and that their human rights are protected.
