The shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, where the gunman, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove his pickup truck through the front doors and opened fire with an assault-style rifle on approximately 100 churchgoers. Sanford later died after exchanging gunfire with police.

In her letter, the woman describes the moment when she came face-to-face with the gunman, stating that she felt “very calm, peaceful even” as she kneeled next to her father’s body.
