Crime Trends in Minnesota: A Mixed Bag
The latest crime statistics released by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) reveal a complex picture of crime trends in Minnesota. According to the 2024 Uniform Crime Report, murders and assaults in the state decreased, while rapes and robberies saw an uptick. The data also highlights regional disparities, with violent crime increasing by 1% in the seven-county Metro area, while decreasing by 3% in greater Minnesota.
Decline in Murders and Assaults
The number of murders in Minnesota continued to decline, with 170 incidents reported in 2024, down from 181 in 2023 and 201 in 2021. Firearms were involved in 74.7% of these incidents, up from 69.6% in 2023. The St. Paul Police Department handled 26 homicide incidents in 2024, the same as in 2023, with nine homicides reported so far this year. Additionally, the number of reported assaults statewide dropped from 9,986 in 2023 to 9,826 in 2024.
Rise in Rapes and Robberies
On the other hand, reported rapes and robberies saw an increase, reversing their post-pandemic downward trend. Rapes rose from 2,053 in 2023 to 2,159 in 2024, while robberies increased from 2,791 in 2023 to 2,836 in 2024. Notably, most of the rapes (73.2%) occurred in a home, with minors accounting for 39.6% of the victims.
Other Crime Trends
Carjacking incidents, including attempted carjackings, increased by 5.5% with 426 incidents in 2024, compared to 401 in 2023. Motor vehicle theft decreased by 19.3% in 2024, with 12,596 vehicles stolen, down from 15,612 in 2023. The number of larceny incidents reached a 56-year low, with 70,898 incidents reported in 2024. Bias crimes rose in 2024, with 225 incidents reported, and peace officers were assaulted in 976 incidents, a 1.5% increase from 2023.
Law Enforcement Use of Force
The report also highlights the use of force by law enforcement, with 27 incidents involving the discharge of a firearm in 2024, up from 17 in 2023. There were 32 overall use-of-force incidents, resulting in 12 deaths and 15 serious injuries. Agencies reported using force on 18 white individuals, 13 Black individuals, and 1 Asian individual.
