NeueHouse, a luxury members-only co-working club, has suddenly closed its three locations in Venice, Hollywood, and New York City, citing severe financial challenges. The unexpected shutdown has left members and staff reeling, with many expressing shock and disappointment at the abrupt closure.
The company’s announcement, published on its website and social media accounts, gave members less than 48 hours to collect their belongings from the clubhouses. According to the company’s statement, “Although NeueHouse has created an extremely valuable business that is prized by members and event hosts, unfortunately, it has been burdened by legacy liabilities.”
Legacy Liabilities and Financial Challenges
Despite efforts to find a sustainable path forward, the company’s board ultimately decided to wind down the business, citing the significant financial challenges it faced. The closure comes just a month after the death of NeueHouse co-founder Joshua Abram, who passed away at the age of 62 due to multiple myeloma. The company’s struggles are not unique, as many co-working spaces have faced difficulties in recent years, including WeWork, which has undergone significant restructuring efforts.
NeueHouse’s business model, which combined upscale co-working spaces with trendy amenities and events, had attracted a loyal membership base. The company’s locations in Venice, Hollywood, and New York City offered a range of amenities, including libraries, co-working spaces, writers’ rooms, juice bars, restaurants, podcast studios, and rooftop terraces. Membership costs ranged from $3,600 for an individual annually to $8,000 a month for a private office, equivalent to $96,000 a year.
Member Reactions and Staff Impact
Members who had paid for annual memberships, including some who had joined just days before the closure announcement, are now seeking refunds. Jennifer Duguay, a member who joined the Venice location in mid-August, expressed her disappointment and concern for the staff, who she said were “hardworking” and “professional” despite being caught off guard by the sudden shutdown. Another member, Katrina Dargel, told Los Angeles Magazine that she was only able to use the Venice clubhouse three times after paying for an annual membership upfront on August 29.
