From Diagnosis to Art: Nardiz Cooke’s Journey with Breast Cancer

Nardiz Cooke’s life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when she discovered a lump in her right breast. Despite her OB-GYN’s reassurance that it was likely fibrosis, a common condition, Cooke’s symptoms persisted. It wasn’t until two years later, when she experienced severe headaches, vomiting, and vision problems, that she received a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her brain.

Cooke’s journey with cancer has been marked by resilience and creativity. After undergoing radiation therapy, she transformed her radiation mask into a symbol of strength and hope. With the help of quartz crystals and other materials, Cooke created a stunning piece of art that now serves as a reminder of her journey.

Turning Adversity into Art

Cooke’s experience with cancer has inspired her to create a collection of art pieces, titled “Radiant Sentinels.” Each piece features a radiation mask transformed into a unique work of art, using materials such as mirrored glass, seashells, and naturally shed deer antlers. The collection has grown to include masks donated by other patients, and Cooke continues to add to it.
