Embracing Wellness: A Journey to Better Health

Wellness advice is ubiquitous, but initiating a journey towards better health can be daunting. With numerous experts offering guidance, it’s essential to start small and be consistent. According to Kristina Schuldt, a family medicine physician and wellness director at the Mayo Clinic Health System, defining personal wellness goals is crucial. “Wellness means different things to people,” she explains. “There’s fitness and physical wellness, but there’s also mental wellness, financial wellness, spiritual wellness.” Schuldt advises individuals to begin with minor adjustments, such as increasing water intake or reducing cigarette consumption, to achieve significant long-term changes.

Starting Small and Finding Support

Schuldt recommends starting with “low-hanging fruit” – small, achievable goals. For instance, increasing daily step count by two blocks each week or experimenting with healthy foods to discover personal preferences. It’s also essential to find supportive individuals who can help stay on track. Jenny Watson, a 36-year-old mom and hairstylist, credits her husband as her biggest supporter in her weight loss journey. After reaching a weight of 420 pounds, Watson found a fitness program that worked for her and has since made significant lifestyle changes, including weightlifting and adopting a whole-food diet.

Avoiding Unrealistic Expectations and Finding Consistency

Fitness trainer Andrea Leigh Rogers, who has worked with celebrities like Gisele Bündchen and Nicole Scherzinger, cautions against falling for trendy wellness programs. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of consistency and finding enjoyable, effective, and sustainable routines. Rogers’ approach follows the acronym FEEL: “It’s fast, it’s enjoyable, it’s effective, and there’s longevity.” She suggests starting with small, manageable changes, such as mindful breathing, stretching, or a 10-minute workout, to develop healthy habits.

Embracing Reboot and Self-Care

James Keppel, who nearly lost his liver to cirrhosis in 2019, emphasizes the importance of self-care and rebooting. After getting sober and making significant lifestyle changes, Keppel faced a series of devastating events, including a split with his wife and the loss of a close family member. He credits his ability to slow down, rest, and recharge with helping him recover. “You have to give yourself the space to get better,” he advises.
