Understanding Food Safety in Your Home Amid Rising Foodborne Illnesses
A recent recall of organic frozen spinach products by Sno Pac Foods, a Minnesota-based company, due to potential listeria contamination, highlights the importance of food safety in our homes. The recall, announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects two types of products: Del Mar 35-pound Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach and Sno Pac 10-ounce Organic Frozen Cut Spinach. The affected products were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through distributors.
The recalled products have specific lot codes and expiry dates. For Del Mar 35-pound Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach, the lot codes are 250107A, 250107B, 250107C, 250107D, 2501071, and 2501073, with an expiry date of 1/7/27. For Sno Pac 10-ounce Organic Frozen Cut Spinach, the lot codes are SPM1.190.5 with a best-by date of 7/9/27, SPC1.160.5 with a best-by date of 6/9/27, SPC2.160.5 with a best-by date of 6/9/27, and SPM1.097.5 with a best-by date of 4/7/27. Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns that listeria can cause serious or fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea if infected with listeria. The FDA advises anyone with the recalled products to dispose of them or return them for a refund. The production of the affected products has been suspended while the company investigates the source of the problem.
