Palisades Charter High School Set to Reopen Campus After Devastating Fire
Palisades Charter High School students are expected to return to their campus in January, nearly a year after the Palisades fire ravaged their community and severely damaged the popular school, displacing approximately 3,000 students. The school has been operating out of a temporary location at the former Sears building in Santa Monica since the fire, but students will soon be able to utilize about 70% of the original campus, which was damaged by smoke but not destroyed, as well as 30 portable buildings that will be set up on the baseball field.
The plan to reopen the campus is a significant step forward for the school community, which has faced numerous challenges since the fire. According to Issam Dahdul, a senior facilities administrator, the school is undergoing an industrial cleaning process to repair the damaged buildings, and the temporary portable buildings are nearly ready for use. However, the full $266.6-million project, which includes a new classroom building and a restored baseball field, is not expected to be completed until the third quarter of 2029.
Challenges and Concerns
The road to recovery has not been easy for Palisades Charter High School. After the fire, the school operated online for four months, using strategies similar to those developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, by the time the temporary campus was set up at the former Sears building, about 1 in 6 students had left the school due to the challenges of attending classes in a non-traditional setting. Some parents have also expressed concerns about the conditions at the temporary campus, including crowding, security, ventilation, and lack of green space.
Additionally, some parents have raised concerns about the safety of returning to the original campus, citing potential toxic substances in the soil. However, district officials have assured the community that thorough testing and monitoring practices are in place to ensure the campus is safe for students and staff.
A Community’s Resilience
Despite the challenges, the Palisades Charter High School community has shown remarkable resilience. According to parent Johanna Minassian, the community is focused on healing and moving forward, and the students have continued to excel academically and socially despite the difficulties they have faced. The school’s faculty and administration have also been praised for their dedication and hard work in supporting the students during this difficult time.
The cost of the temporary campus at the former Sears building was approximately $11 million, which was largely covered by insurance policies held by the school. The school’s reconstruction project is expected to be paid for initially through voter-approved school bonds, with the hope of reimbursing the bond account through federal disaster relief funds and insurance payouts.
