Patrick Dempsey Opens Up About Eric Dane’s Courageous Battle with ALS

Patrick Dempsey has revealed that Eric Dane’s devastating battle with ALS made it hard for the former “Grey’s Anatomy” co-stars to reunite for a new show that released over the weekend. In a recent interview with Parade, Dempsey shared his concerns and admiration for Dane’s courage in the face of this debilitating disease.

A Heartbreaking Diagnosis

Dane, 53, was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025, and his condition has progressed rapidly. Despite his struggles, he has continued to work on various projects, including a guest appearance in an episode of the NBC series “Brilliant Minds” that aired in November. Dempsey, 60, expressed his admiration for Dane’s determination and courage, stating, “He’s such a wonderful human being… He has such a great sense of humor, and he’s so intelligent.”

A Lasting Impact

Dempsey and Dane starred together in “Grey’s Anatomy” from 2006 to 2012, playing the iconic characters Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd and Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, respectively. Their on-screen chemistry and off-screen friendship have made their reunion a highly anticipated event. However, Dane’s ALS diagnosis has made it challenging for them to work together again. Dempsey shared, “We were trying to get him in [“Memory of a Killer”], but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible.”

Raising Awareness

Dane has been using his platform to raise awareness about ALS, a disease that affects the nervous system and has no cure. He has been open about his struggles and has become an advocate for ALS research and awareness. Dempsey praised Dane’s efforts, saying, “He’s bringing a lot of light to that, and he’s using his platform in a positive way.” Despite his own struggles, Dane remains committed to his family and his mission to educate others about ALS.
