Mysterious Shooting of Melissa Rocuba: A Case of Deception and Betrayal

On a fateful summer evening in August 2013, 22-year-old Chelsea Cicio received a distressing call from her father, Bruno Rocuba, informing her that her mother, Melissa Rocuba, had been injured in a terrible accident. The events that unfolded would leave the family and investigators baffled, and it would take years to unravel the truth behind Melissa’s tragic death.

Cicio, who lived next door to her parents in Simpson, Pennsylvania, was captured on a home security camera, frantically rushing to her parents’ house, screaming “Mommy, Mommy” as she entered the house to find her mother shot in the head. The scene was nothing short of horrific, with blood splattered all over the floor and the side of the bed. As Cicio recounted the events to “48 Hours” correspondent Anne-Marie Green, she revisited the scene, describing the devastating moment she found her mother.

According to Bruno Rocuba’s initial account, he had been sitting on the bed, cleaning his gun, when Melissa sat down, and it accidentally went off, shooting her in the head and himself in the left hand. However, as the investigation progressed, inconsistencies in his story began to emerge, raising suspicions about the true events of that fateful night.

Investigation and Inconsistencies

The day after the shooting, Bruno Rocuba agreed to walk Pennsylvania State troopers through the crime scene, explaining how the shooting occurred. He demonstrated how he accidentally shot his wife using a toy gun, claiming the.40 caliber pistol was on the nightstand due to several robberies in the neighborhood. However, his daughters, Cicio and Sabrina Rocuba, would later express doubts about their father’s story, citing his behavior and actions in the days and weeks that followed.

Melissa Rocuba was airlifted to the hospital and placed on life support, while Bruno Rocuba was taken to a different hospital for surgery on his hand. As the family gathered at the hospital, they were shocked by Bruno’s seemingly cavalier attitude, with him asking his daughters to clean the bloody house and get rid of the mattress on which their mother had been shot. This behavior, coupled with his decision to get rid of Melissa’s belongings, including her beloved dog, Zeus, raised eyebrows and sparked suspicions about his potential involvement in her death.

New Evidence and Arrest

Seven years after the shooting, in 2020, Pennsylvania State Police investigators Greg Allen and Dan Nilon reopened the case, and their thorough investigation uncovered a key piece of evidence that had been overlooked: a home security system that captured footage of Melissa Rocuba’s last movements and words. The footage revealed inconsistencies in Bruno Rocuba’s story, including a 911 call where he provided three different accounts of the shooting.

On June 3, 2022, nearly nine years after Melissa Rocuba’s death, Bruno Rocuba was arrested and charged with her murder. Two years later, in May 2024, he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 12 to 40 years behind bars, with the possibility of parole starting in 2035.

Conclusion

The case of Melissa Rocuba’s mysterious shooting serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough investigations and the need for vigilance in uncovering the truth. As the family continues to grapple with the aftermath of Melissa’s tragic death, they find solace in the fact that justice has been served, albeit belatedly.
