The Rise of AI-Generated Music: Can Humans Tell the Difference?
According to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos for France-based streaming platform Deezer, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for people to distinguish between music generated by artificial intelligence and that created by humans. The survey, which involved 9,000 participants from eight countries, including Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States, found that 97% of respondents could not tell the difference between AI-generated music and human-made music.
The survey, which was conducted between October 6 and 10, presented participants with two clips of AI-generated music and one clip of human-made music. The results showed that more than half of the respondents felt uncomfortable about not being able to tell the difference, highlighting concerns about the impact of AI on the music industry. Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier stated, “The survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know if they’re listening to AI or human-made tracks or not.”
Concerns About AI-Generated Music
The survey also explored broader questions about the impact of AI on the music industry, with 51% of respondents believing that AI would lead to more low-quality music on streaming platforms and almost two-thirds thinking it would result in a loss of creativity. These concerns are not unfounded, as the use of AI in music production is becoming increasingly prevalent. In fact, Deezer reported that the number of AI-generated tracks streamed on its platform has surged, with nearly 40,000 AI-generated tracks being streamed daily, up from just 10% of daily streams in January.
Furthermore, the issue of transparency in AI-generated music has become a topic of discussion, with 80% of survey respondents wanting fully AI-generated music to be clearly labeled for listeners. Deezer is currently the only major music-streaming platform that systematically labels completely AI-generated content for users. This move towards transparency is essential, as demonstrated by the case of the AI-generated band “The Velvet Sundown,” which went viral on Spotify without disclosing its AI origins.
Industry Response and Future Directions
In response to the growing concerns about AI-generated music, Spotify has encouraged artists and publishers to sign up to a voluntary industry code to disclose AI use in music production. This move is a step towards promoting transparency and accountability in the music industry. As AI technology continues to evolve and improve, it’s essential to address the challenges and concerns surrounding AI-generated music, ensuring that the industry prioritizes creativity, quality, and transparency.
