President Trump’s Policies Unite Latino Vote in Disapproval
President Trump has united the Latino vote, but not in the way he might have hoped. A new study from the Pew Research Center found that a majority of U.S. Latino adults disapprove of the job Trump has done since returning to the White House earlier this year. The study reveals that 70% of Latinos disapprove of Trump’s handling of his job as president, with 65% disapproving of his approach to immigration and 61% saying his policies have made economic conditions worse.
Immigration and Economic Concerns
Ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids throughout the country and continued economic turmoil have led many Latinos to grow upset with the politician. Trump’s 2024 campaign centered on carrying out the “largest deportation operation in American history” and fixing the nation’s fledgling economy, but it appears that these policies have had the opposite effect. According to the Pew study, 68% of Latinos said the situation for U.S. Latinos is worse today than it was a year ago, with 89% of Kamala Harris voters and 66% of nonvoters agreeing with this assessment.
Party Affiliation and Approval Ratings
Party affiliation still plays a significant role in how Latinos grade Trump’s performance. Overall, 81% of 2024 Latino Trump voters approved of his job so far, although this has dipped from 93% since the onset of his second term. In contrast, Trump’s approval rating among 2024 Latino nonvoters has moved from 42% down to 27%, and his approval rating among all Latino groups has slumped from 42% at the beginning of the year to 27% this fall.
A recent Axios/Ipsos poll conducted in partnership with Noticias Telemundo found that 65% of respondents said that it’s a “bad time” to be Latino or Hispanic in the U.S., up from 40% in March 2024. When broken down by party, 84% of Democrats said it was a bad time, compared with 68% of independents and 32% of Republicans.
Impact of Trump’s Policies on the Latino Community
A majority of those polled by Pew felt that Trump’s policies have been more harmful than helpful to the Latino community, with 78% agreeing with this statement. Harris voters were united against Trump, with 97% agreeing that his policies have negatively affected their community. Nonvoters were also in agreement, with 78% feeling that Trump’s policies have had adverse effects on Latinos.
These findings seem to contradict the narrative that Latinos nationwide have made a rightward turn politically in recent years. While Trump garnered 48% of the Latino vote in the 2024 presidential election, compared to 36% in 2020, his policies have clearly had a negative impact on the community.
