Shooting at Coast Guard Base in Alameda Amid Protests Against Immigration Enforcement Surge

A dramatic and violent incident unfolded on Thursday night at the U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda, California, as law enforcement officers opened fire on a U-Haul truck that was backing into a line of Coast Guard and police personnel. The incident occurred outside the base entrance, where a day-long protest had been taking place against a planned immigration enforcement surge in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A KPIX photographer captured video footage of the incident, showing the U-Haul truck reversing toward the base entrance and law enforcement firing their weapons at the vehicle. According to photographer Rick Villaroman, the U-Haul had been parked outside the base for most of the day before it suddenly began to back up quickly toward the officers blocking the gate. “He just hit the gas and sped towards them,” Villaroman said. “And that’s when they opened fire. About 20 to 30 rounds.”

Investigation and Response

The Coast Guard released a statement on social media, explaining that Coast Guard security personnel had observed the vehicle driving erratically and attempting to back into the base. Despite multiple verbal commands to stop, the driver failed to comply, prompting law enforcement officers to discharge several rounds of live fire. Fortunately, no Coast Guard personnel were injured during the incident. The FBI is leading the investigation, and the Coast Guard is coordinating with law enforcement partners.

The driver of the U-Haul truck fled the scene after the shooting but later returned, parking the vehicle down the street and abandoning it. Witnesses reported that the truck had struck two bystanders, but there was no immediate confirmation of any injuries. Villaroman inspected the abandoned vehicle and found multiple bullet holes but no blood in the cabin.

Protests Against Immigration Enforcement Surge

The protests outside the Coast Guard base were sparked by a planned immigration enforcement surge by Border Patrol agents in the San Francisco Bay Area. The base was to be the staging area for the operation, which was expected to target undocumented immigrants in the region. However, President Trump later announced that the planned surge in San Francisco had been called off, although it was unclear whether other Bay Area cities would still see an increase in immigration enforcement activity.

Protesters began gathering outside the base entrance early on Thursday morning, with some attempting to block vehicles from entering the base. The gathering turned into a day-long standoff between California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and protesters, who were later joined by additional demonstrators marching from a rally in Oakland’s Fruitvale District.

Use of Force by Law Enforcement

During the protests, law enforcement officers deployed smoke grenades and flash bang devices to disperse the crowd. At least two people were detained, and one demonstrator, identified as Minister Jorge Bautista, was hit by a piece of shrapnel or a projectile. Bautista, who was part of a group of interfaith leaders taking part in the protest, spoke to reporters after the incident, saying, “I obviously was shot with whatever that Border Patrol had… And I came to say we came in peace, and he didn’t care.”

The incident highlights the tensions and conflicts that can arise during protests and law enforcement operations. As the investigation into the shooting continues, it is essential to consider the complex issues surrounding immigration enforcement and the importance of ensuring public safety while respecting the rights of all individuals involved.
