Rapper RBX Sues Spotify Over Alleged Artificial Inflation of Music Streams
Rapper RBX, whose real name is Eric Dwayne Collins, has filed a lawsuit against Spotify, alleging that the music streaming platform has failed to prevent the artificial inflation of music streams for artists like Drake, resulting in lost revenue for other rights holders. According to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Spotify pays rights holders a percentage of revenue based on the total streams attributed to them compared to the total volume of streams for all songs.
RBX, known for his work on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album “The Chronic” and Snoop Dogg’s 1993 album “Doggystyle,” is seeking class-action status and damages and restitution from Spotify. The lawsuit claims that Spotify has failed to effectively combat the use of bots powered by automated software, which artificially inflate streams for certain artists, including Drake. For example, the lawsuit notes that over a four-day period in 2024, there were at least 250,000 streams of Drake’s “No Face” song that appeared to originate in Turkey but were falsely geomapped to the United Kingdom using VPNs.
Spotify’s Response to Allegations
Spotify has declined to comment on the pending litigation but stated that it “in no way benefits from the industry-wide challenge of artificial streaming.” The company claims to have invested heavily in systems to combat artificial streaming, including removing fake streams, withholding royalties, and charging penalties. In fact, Spotify said it was able to limit a $10 million theft from streaming services to $60,000 on its platform last year, citing this as evidence that its systems are working.
Additionally, Spotify has been actively working to remove AI-generated music that is made without artists’ permission. In September, the company announced that it had removed over 75 million AI-generated “spammy” music tracks from its platform over the last 12 months. This effort is part of the company’s broader push to ensure the integrity of its platform and protect the rights of artists and rights holders.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Music Industry
The use of artificial intelligence is changing the way the entertainment industry operates, with significant implications for the music industry. While some artists have embraced AI as a tool for creative expression, others have raised concerns about the potential for AI to be used to manipulate streaming numbers and undermine the integrity of the platform. As the music industry continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more lawsuits and debates about the role of AI in shaping the music landscape.
