A Life of Service and Leadership
Hering’s commitment to public service was evident from the beginning of his career, which spanned over four decades. Born and raised in Bayport, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, who also served in public safety roles. Hering began his policing career in 1970 in Bayport and later served as a firefighter in Coon Rapids and a police officer in Oakdale before joining the Woodbury Public Safety Department.

He emphasized the importance of service, ensuring that call responses and investigations were conducted with compassion and support for individuals and the community. Hering’s dedication to his work earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues, including current Woodbury Public Safety Director Jason Posel.

Posel, who had the opportunity to work with Hering, remembered him as a “gentle, kind, and thoughtful leader with a wonderful sense of humor.” Hering’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments, as he was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his love of photography, softball, and fire station history, and he cherished annual summer vacations with his family.

His dedication to the Woodbury Public Safety Department has left a lasting legacy, and his memory will continue to inspire and guide the department’s mission.
