Ryan Routh Found Guilty of Attempting to Assassinate Donald Trump
A Florida jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Ryan Routh, who was accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump in September 2024. Routh, who represented himself in the trial, was found guilty of all five charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer.
The incident occurred at Trump’s golf course, where a Secret Service agent testified that he spotted Routh before Trump came into view. Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot. This was the second assassination attempt against Trump in 2024, following an incident at a Pennsylvania rally where a bullet grazed Trump’s ear.
Reaction to the Verdict
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the guilty verdict “illustrates the Department of Justice’s commitment to punishing those who engage in political violence.” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche added that the verdict sends “a clear message” that an “attempt to assassinate a presidential candidate is an attack on our Republic and on the rights of every citizen.” Routh faces life in prison, with a federal district judge set to determine his sentence.
In his closing argument, Routh claimed that there was no intent to kill since the trigger was never pulled and no one was hurt. However, prosecutors argued that Routh spent weeks plotting to kill Trump and had a loaded round in the chamber with the safety off. They also alleged that Routh attempted to acquire an anti-aircraft weapon to shoot down Trump’s plane.
Trial and Investigation
Routh had submitted a witness list that included Trump, as well as several prominent authors and activists, but many of these potential witnesses were rejected by Judge Aileen Canon. Prosecutors presented evidence of Routh’s actions leading up to the incident, saying “those aren’t coincidences … that’s a plan.” The guilty verdict was met with a dramatic reaction from Routh, who apparently tried to harm himself in the courtroom after the verdict was read.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and security of public figures, particularly during election periods. The Department of Justice has reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting those who engage in political violence. For more information on this case, visit Here
