Buffalo Sabres Fire General Manager Kevyn Adams Amidst Disappointing Season
The Buffalo Sabres have made a significant change in their front office, firing General Manager Kevyn Adams after two and a half months into his sixth season. This move comes as the team struggles at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy for a record 15th consecutive year.
According to team owner Terry Pegula, the decision to let Adams go was made due to the team’s underperformance. “We are not where we need to be as an organization, and we are moving forward with new leadership within our hockey operations department,” Pegula stated. The team’s new General Manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, was already part of the organization, serving as a senior adviser since June. Kekalainen, a former Columbus Blue Jackets GM, brings a wealth of experience, having led the Blue Jackets to the playoffs five times during his 11-year tenure.
New Leadership and a Fresh Start
Kekalainen’s appointment as the new General Manager marks a new era for the Sabres. With his extensive experience in the NHL, including stints with the St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators, he is well-equipped to lead the team towards a more successful future. “It is a great honor to be named general manager of the Buffalo Sabres,” Kekalainen said. “I am humbled to be the steward of this team and look forward to experiencing the passion that Sabres fans bring to every game.”
Adams’ tenure was marked by criticism for mismanaging the team’s assets, failing to secure a franchise goalie, and not addressing the leadership void that has plagued the team. Despite his efforts to rebuild the team, the Sabres have regressed over the past two seasons, finishing with 84 points in the 2023-2024 season and 79 points last year. This season, the team has struggled with consistency, hovering around.500 and facing challenges on the road.
A Look Back at Adams’ Tenure
Adams took over as General Manager in June 2020, launching a major rebuilding plan that included trading top players like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart. Although the team showed signs of development, they have since regressed, leading to Adams’ dismissal. His missteps, including failing to secure a franchise goalie and mismanaging the team’s goaltending position, have been well-documented. The team has had 11 goalies start at least one game since Linus Ullmark left in free agency in 2021.
