Sean McVay to Discuss Controversial 2-Point Conversion with NFL Competition Committee
Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, a member of the NFL’s competition committee, will likely bring up a specific situation and rule for discussion during the group’s next meeting. The topic of discussion will be the controversial two-point conversion attempt by the Seattle Seahawks during their 38-37 win over the Rams on Thursday night at Lumen Field in Seattle. The play, which was initially ruled a forward pass, was later changed to a backward pass after review, allowing the Seahawks to tie the game.
McVay stated that he did not receive clarity on the call during the game, but he did receive an explanation the following day. According to McVay, the issue was a “technicality” regarding the advancement of a fumble on two-point plays or fourth downs. The referee explained that since the play was ruled a backward pass, the Seahawks were able to advance the ball, resulting in a successful conversion. McVay expressed his appreciation for the officials’ difficult job but emphasized that such plays should not be counted as conversions.
Player Reactions and Injuries
Rams defensive lineman Kobie Turner was “definitely shook” by the changed call and acknowledged that he should have picked up the ball instead of celebrating with his teammate. Turner noted that the team has meetings about being “situational masters” who always end up with the ball. Meanwhile, Rams guard Kevin Dotson suffered an ankle sprain during the game and is doubtful for the team’s December 29 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Receiver Davante Adams is also likely to miss the game due to a hamstring injury.
Discipline and Education
Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall was suspended for one game due to his actions during the game, including stomping on Dotson. McVay stated that the behavior was “not stuff we want in our game.” Additionally, Rams receiver Puka Nacua will not face additional discipline from the team for his critical comments about officials, but McVay will continue to educate him on the importance of his platform and the appropriate time and place for expressing his opinions.
