Minnesota Twins Embark on a New Era with Derek Shelton at the Helm
The Minnesota Twins have officially introduced Derek Shelton as their new manager, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the team. During the news conference, Shelton and Twins Executive Chair Joe Pohlad discussed the team’s future, including their approach to the upcoming season and beyond.
A Fresh Start for the Twins
After a disappointing season, the Twins are looking to rebuild and start anew. Shelton emphasized the importance of learning from the past and building on the positives. “I’m going to build off what happened in September. I really like what happened in September,” he said. “You guys know, you cover the team — ultra aggressive on the bases, started to push the envelope a little bit. I think we have to continue on that.” However, the team’s performance in September, with a 12-24 record over the final 36 games, raises questions about the effectiveness of this approach.
Despite the challenges, Shelton remains optimistic about the team’s potential. He highlighted the importance of developing young players and creating a strong foundation for the future. The Twins have a promising group of young arms, including Simeon Woods Richardson, Mick Abel, and Taj Bradley, who were acquired via trade, as well as Zebby Mathews and David Festa, who were developed from the system.
Payroll and Player Movement
The Twins’ payroll for the upcoming season is expected to be significantly lower than in previous years. According to Spotrac.com, the team started last season with a payroll of just under $130 million, while Baseball-reference.com reports that the team has only $50.9 million in guaranteed contracts for next season. This reduction in payroll may lead to changes in the team’s roster, with players like Pablo López and Joe Ryan potentially being traded to trim costs and acquire prospects.
Falvey acknowledged the need to be strategic in building the team, stating, “I’m just trying to continue to build a plan around the options that are available to us via trade, free agency or otherwise, that can find ways to augment the group.” However, the lack of clarity on the team’s payroll and plans for the future has raised concerns among fans and observers.
A Long-Term Perspective
While Shelton promised “better things ahead” for the club, it is unlikely that significant improvements will occur in the short term. The team’s focus on developing young players and rebuilding the roster suggests that the road to success will be a long one. As Shelton and the Twins front office navigate this process, they will need to balance the needs of the present with the goals of the future.
