Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk: Honoring the Heroes of 9/11

Nearly 40,000 runners and walkers gathered in New York City on Sunday to participate in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K run and walk, an event that pays tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event, which takes place on the last Sunday of September, retraces the steps of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who died while saving others when the Twin Towers fell on that fateful morning.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which organizes the event, has several programs that benefit fallen first responders, including the Fallen First Responder Home Program, the Tunnel to Towers Smart Home Program, and the Gold Star Family Home Program. These programs provide vital support to the families of first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

A Personal Tribute to Stephen Siller

Stephen Siller’s son, also named Stephen, spoke with FOX Weather Meteorologist Bayne Froney ahead of the event, saying, “For me, this is one of the most beautiful days of the year. Everything he sacrificed culminates today. We have thousands of first responder families and 40,000 people showing up to retrace his steps. The fact that 24 years after that, this is what it’s become. It’s incredibly beautiful.”

Tens of thousands of people are descending upon New York City to run the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K that honors those lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The Tunnel to Towers 5K run and walk is more than just an event – it’s a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of tragedy. It’s a reminder of the bravery and selflessness of first responders like Stephen Siller, who risk their lives every day to protect and serve their communities.
