Stranger Things Season 5: A Bittersweet Reunion for Fans
Seasons change, kids grow up, and monsters evolve. The beloved TV series “Stranger Things” is no exception, as its fifth and final season kicks off after a nearly three-and-a-half-year absence. The show’s return is a welcome but bittersweet reunion for fans who have spent the last decade watching a group of misfit kids, now teens, battle supernatural and mortal enemies in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The final season promises to be an epic conclusion to the series, with a final battle against the mind-bending nemesis, Vecna. The season’s Volume 1 arrives with four new episodes, followed by Volume 2 (three episodes) on Christmas Day, and the finale on December 31. While the staggering of episodes may be frustrating for some fans, it gives sentimental viewers more time to emotionally uncouple with the show.
A Generational Touchstone Comes to an End
The end of “Stranger Things” marks the end of an era, and possibly the last generational touchstone to come out of series television. Gen Z, which grew up in the dawn of YouTube and later, the emergence of TikTok, has generally favored short-form content over lengthier productions. However, “Stranger Things” became the exception, with young fans stretching their attention spans to watch entire seasons of the show.
The show’s setting in the Reagan era allowed parents of Gen Zers to watch the series with their kids while revisiting their own fond and/or torturous memories of growing up in the 1980s. The show’s nostalgic value is undeniable, with nods to great bands like the Fall, and a well-timed mention of a flux capacitor.
A Final Battle Against Vecna
Last seen, antagonist Vecna had finally opened the gates to the Upside Down, merging it with the real world. The town’s beloved band of nerds knows better, and they’ve been doing covert “crawls” to locate and destroy Vecna before he turns the town, then the world, into an oozy wasteland. Joining the fight are familiar characters, including Mike’s older sister Nancy, Will’s big brother Jonathan, and friends Steve and Robin.
Eleven has been training hard, honing her powers, and is now poised for a final battle against Vecna. The season promises to be an epic conclusion, with a mega battle on the horizon, and the characters’ original circumstances haven’t changed much, but their outlooks have, making for unpredictable twists in their powers, strengths, and alliances.
A Tribute to the Show’s Enduring Appeal
The Duffer Brothers, creators of the show, lean heavily on the interpersonal feuds and friendships between the characters, pairing high-budget action with advancing storylines about folks that fans have come to love. The show’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to balance action, suspense, and nostalgia, making it a must-watch for fans of all ages.
As the final season comes to a close, fans will be left with a sense of nostalgia and loss, but also a sense of satisfaction and completion. The show’s conclusion is a testament to its enduring appeal and the impact it has had on popular culture. For more information, read the full review Here
