Incident at Como Park High School: Student Arrested for Possession of Firearm
A recent incident at Como Park Senior High School in St. Paul has raised concerns about student safety. On Tuesday, a report of a gun at the school led to the arrest of a 16-year-old student off school grounds. According to Sgt. Toy Vixayvong, a St. Paul police spokesman, a staff member was informed that a student had shown another student a gun, prompting an immediate response from school authorities and law enforcement.
Swift Action by School Authorities and Police
The suspect was brought to the office to be searched for weapons but attempted to flee the building, located on Rose Avenue. Police were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. and quickly located the student running in the area of Mackubin Street and Lawson Avenue, approximately a mile from the school. The student was detained, and a handgun along with a loaded magazine was recovered from a nearby yard where the suspect had been seen.
The 16-year-old was subsequently booked into the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of possession of a firearm by an ineligible person. This incident highlights the importance of students reporting concerns to trusted adults, as emphasized by Como Park High School Principal Diana Brown in a message to parents. Principal Brown reminded parents that students often become aware of situations before adults and urged them to remind their children to report any concerns immediately to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
Recent Incidents Involving Firearms in St. Paul Schools
This incident is not isolated, as just last week, on the first day of school in St. Paul, a 14-year-old student was found with a handgun at Johnson Senior High School on Arcade Street and arrested. Fortunately, the handgun was unloaded when recovered by police. These incidents underscore the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between students, school staff, and law enforcement to maintain a safe learning environment.
