Australia’s Bondi Beach Shooting: A Targeted Attack on Jewish Australians
On a warm day, over 1,000 people gathered on Bondi Beach to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah in Australia. However, the joyful atmosphere was disrupted by a terror plot, allegedly planned in advance by a father and son duo, who opened fire with rifles into the crowd, with an improvised explosive device at the ready in their car.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the mass shooting as “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians.” New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also stated that it was “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community.” The attack has raised concerns about the preparedness of the police, given the significant increase in antisemitic threats and attacks in Australia following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, as reported by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.
Police Preparedness and Response
Despite the heightened risk, the two assailants were able to fire shots toward the beach for over five minutes, according to eyewitness accounts. Videos show the gunmen taking their time to aim, shoot, and then duck from a bridge near the beach. A good Samaritan, identified as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, intervened and wrestled a gun away from one of the shooters, suffering two gunshot wounds in the process. Oded Ailam, a former Israeli intelligence officer, reviewed the videos of the attack and questioned the role of police, stating that “the first initial reaction wasn’t even by police, it was by civilians, which raised a lot of questions about the role of police.”
Ailam also suggested that the attack was preplanned, stating that “everything points to this being a preplanned attack that was planned for a significant amount of time.” The alleged assailants, a father and son duo originally from Pakistan, had six firearms, purchased legally, and had assembled an improvised explosive device to target the Jewish gathering.
Rising Antisemitism in Australia
Australia has experienced a significant increase in antisemitic attacks and incidents in the past two years, according to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. Notable incidents include an arson attack on the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne and another at the kosher food provider Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney, both of which were tied to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).
The Australian government has taken steps to address the issue, including expelling Iran’s ambassador and three other Iranian diplomats in August. However, the problem persists, with antisemitic incidents in Australia remaining at historically high levels, almost five times the average annual number before October 7, 2023. The J7 Task Force Against Antisemitism, which includes Australia, has also noted a significant spike in antisemitic incidents globally.
Expert Insights and Reactions
Oren Segal, senior vice president of counter-extremism and intelligence at the Anti-Defamation League, stated that “this attack is not only the latest in a disturbing series of antisemitic incidents in Australia but also around the globe, including in the United States. And these incidents are becoming increasingly violent.” The attack has sparked concerns about the growing security threat to the Jewish community in Australia and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation to prevent such incidents in the future.
