Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Technology Under Investigation by Auto Safety Regulators
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe into Tesla Inc.’s partial-automation software, known as “Full Self-Driving” (FSD), following reports of vehicles driving through red lights and violating other traffic laws. The investigation involves an estimated 2.9 million vehicles and is focused on assessing the “scope, frequency and potential safety consequences” of the FSD behavior cited in the incidents.
Incidents and Injuries Reported
A total of 58 incidents have been reported, including instances where Teslas drove in the wrong direction on a road. Several of these incidents resulted in crashes and injuries, although none have been fatal. The regulator has identified six specific reports where a Tesla vehicle with FSD engaged approached an intersection with a red traffic signal and continued to travel into the intersection, resulting in a crash with other vehicles.
Notably, multiple incidents occurred at the same intersection in Maryland, prompting Tesla to take action to address the issue at this location. The NHTSA’s investigation aims to determine the cause of these incidents and evaluate the safety consequences of the FSD technology.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Concerns
This probe adds to the growing scrutiny of Tesla’s driver-assistance technology, which has been the subject of several investigations in recent years. The NHTSA has previously looked into whether FSD has the ability to detect and respond to fog and other reduced visibility conditions. Additionally, the agency has investigated Tesla’s Autopilot features and the company’s reporting of crashes in a timely manner.
The FSD system is a central component of Tesla’s efforts to develop driverless cars, with CEO Elon Musk predicting that drivers in certain states will soon no longer need to pay attention when FSD is engaged. However, the ongoing investigation highlights the need for rigorous testing and evaluation of autonomous driving technologies to ensure public safety.
Market Reaction and Next Steps
Tesla shares fell 1.4% following the announcement of the investigation, although the company’s stock has gained about 9% this year. As the probe continues, Tesla will likely face increased regulatory scrutiny and potential reputational risks. The NHTSA’s findings and any subsequent actions will be closely watched by investors, regulators, and the public.
