Texas Brothers Charged with Kidnapping and Crypto Theft in Washington County
Two brothers from Texas, Isiah Angelo Garcia, 24, and Raymond Christian Garcia, 23, have been charged with multiple counts of kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated robbery in connection with a shocking incident in Grant, Minnesota. According to court documents, the brothers held a family hostage at gunpoint for nine hours, forcing the father to drive to their cabin in Jacobson, Minnesota, and stealing $36,000 in cryptocurrency.
Incident Details
The incident began around 7:45 a.m. on Friday when the Grant man exited his home to take out the garbage. The Garcia brothers, dressed in dark clothing and wearing masks, approached him and forced him into his garage at gunpoint. One brother was armed with an AR-15 style rifle, while the other carried a shotgun.
The brothers then woke up the man’s wife and son, bound them with zip ties, and held them hostage for nine hours. Isiah Garcia forced the father to drive to their family cabin in Jacobson, Minnesota, where he was forced to transfer an additional $36,000 in cryptocurrency to an unknown account.
Investigation and Arrest
The police learned of the incident when the couple’s son called 911 around 4:45 p.m. and whispered that they were being held hostage. Deputies located the caller and his mother in a bedroom on the third floor of the house, with the door tied shut with a wire. During the invasion, the Garcias were frequently on cellular phones with an unknown third party who directed them on the cryptocurrency transfer process.
Over the weekend, detectives, deputies, and K-9 teams from the sheriff’s office and the St. Paul Police Department searched the area and recovered weapons near the scene, along with other items of interest. On Monday, Washington County detectives, with the assistance of the Waller County, Texas, sheriff’s office, arrested the Garcias.
Charges and Aftermath
Each brother has been charged with three counts of kidnapping, three counts of first-degree burglary, and aggravated robbery. The incident caused a “shelter in place” warning to be issued in the immediate area, and the cancellation of Mahtomedi High School’s homecoming football game against Bloomington Kennedy.
The Grant man believed that some of his cryptocurrency account information had been leaked during a data breach, which may have led to the targeted attack. The incident highlights the growing concern of cryptocurrency theft and the importance of securing digital assets.
