Texas Sues Tylenol Makers Over Alleged Autism Risks
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Tylenol, accusing them of failing to warn consumers about the potential risks of taking the medication while pregnant. According to Paxton, Johnson & Johnson and its spinoff company Kenvue hid information about the link between Tylenol and autism, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Controversy Surrounding Tylenol and Autism
The lawsuit comes after President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. issued warnings last month about the potential risks of taking Tylenol during pregnancy. However, scientists have stated that the link between Tylenol and autism is not proven. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has also rejected the warning, stating that Tylenol is one of the few safe options available for pregnant women to manage pain and fever.
Dr. Steven J. Fleischman, president of ACOG, said in a statement, “Suggestions that acetaminophen use in pregnancy causes autism are not only highly concerning to clinicians but also irresponsible when considering the harmful and confusing message they send to pregnant patients, including those who may need to rely on this beneficial medicine during pregnancy.” Medical groups have emphasized the importance of relying on scientific evidence when making decisions about medication use during pregnancy.
Response from Johnson & Johnson and Kenvue
Johnson & Johnson has stated that it divested its consumer health business years ago and that all rights and liabilities associated with the sale of its over-the-counter products, including Tylenol, are owned by Kenvue. Kenvue has responded to Paxton’s accusations, stating that they “lack legal merit and scientific support.” The company has emphasized its commitment to the health and safety of its customers, saying, “Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of the people who use our products.”
Kenvue has also expressed concern about the perpetuation of misinformation about the safety of acetaminophen, which could have a negative impact on the health of American women and children. The company has reaffirmed its dedication to providing safe and effective products, while also promoting transparency and accuracy in scientific research.
The lawsuit filed by Paxton is the first of its kind by a state and has sparked controversy among medical professionals and patient advocacy groups. As the debate surrounding Tylenol and autism continues, it is essential to rely on credible sources of information and to consult with healthcare professionals before making any decisions about medication use during pregnancy.
