Feeding Our Future Scandal: Last Defendant Pleads Guilty in Juror Bribery Attempt

Said Farah, a defendant in the high-profile Feeding Our Future case, has pleaded guilty to attempting to bribe a juror, marking the latest development in a sprawling scandal that has rocked the nation. Farah, 43, admitted to conspiring with his co-defendants to bribe a juror with $200,000 in exchange for an acquittal.

Background on the Feeding Our Future Scandal

The Feeding Our Future scandal began to unfold in 2022, when federal prosecutors accused 73 individuals of participating in a conspiracy to steal hundreds of millions of dollars from taxpayer-funded nutritional programs for children. The scheme, which exploited lax supervision and loose regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, allegedly involved the non-profit organization Feeding Our Future and several other entities.

On June 3, 2024, US District Judge Nancy Brasel halted the trial of seven defendants accused of stealing over $47 million from taxpayers, after it was discovered that one of the jurors had been approached with a bribe offer. The juror, who was later dismissed from the case, had been offered $500,000 in exchange for an acquittal.

Guilty Pleas and Sentencings

Farah’s guilty plea marks the latest in a series of convictions and sentencings related to the Feeding Our Future scandal. In September, Ladan Ali, 32, admitted to delivering $120,000 in cash to the juror’s relative as part of the bribery scheme. Ali also revealed that the juror had asked for $500,000 in exchange for an acquittal, but had never agreed to take the money.

On August 6, Judge Brasel sentenced Abdiaziz Farah, Said’s younger brother, to 28 years in prison for his leading role in the fraud scheme. Several other defendants have also pleaded guilty or been convicted in connection with the scandal.

As the case continues to unfold, federal prosecutors have praised the courage and integrity of the juror who was targeted by the bribery scheme, saying that their actions helped to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Feeding Our Future scandal serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in public programs, and the need for robust safeguards to prevent abuse and exploitation.
