Democratic Senators Face Backlash for Voting to End Government Shutdown
A group of eight Democratic senators have faced intense criticism from their own party for voting to advance a compromise bill that would reopen the government, ending the 40-day shutdown. The decision has been labeled a “betrayal” and “pathetic” by prominent Democratic voices, including Senator Bernie Sanders, who stated, “To my mind, this was a very, very bad vote.”
Understanding the Senators’ Decision
The group of defectors, which includes several retiring senators and former governors, reached their decision after hours of negotiations, often in the Senate basement. They concluded that the government shutdown had caused too much pain for the American people and that it was time to end it. As Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire explained, “This was the only deal on the table. It was our best chance to reopen the government and immediately begin negotiations to extend the ACA tax credits that tens of millions of Americans rely on to keep costs down.”
Other senators, such as Dick Durbin of Illinois and Tim Kaine of Virginia, also expressed their concerns about the impact of the shutdown on the American people. Durbin stated, “This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce the shutdown’s hurt,” while Kaine emphasized the importance of preventing mass layoffs and protecting federal employees.
The Role of Moderate Democrats
Moderate Democrats, including Senators Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Angus King of Maine, and Jacky Rosen of Nevada, played a crucial role in negotiating the compromise bill. They emphasized the urgent need to refill funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and ensure that states that spent their own funds to keep it running during the shutdown would be reimbursed.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada highlighted the devastating impact of the shutdown on her state’s tourism industry, while Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania criticized Democrats for using the shutdown to demand concessions on healthcare. Fetterman stated, “I’m sorry to our military, SNAP recipients, gov workers, and Capitol Police who haven’t been paid in weeks. It should’ve never come to this. This was a failure.”
