TikTok Creators Welcome Deal to Keep App in U.S.

Keith Lee, a former professional MMA fighter, has come a long way since his days of doing food delivery and creating social media videos to ease his social anxiety. Recently, he walked the red carpet outside the historic Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard, where he was recognized as TikTok’s “Creator of the Year.” This milestone marks a significant turning point in Lee’s career, which has been heavily influenced by the popular social media platform.

Lee, who has 17.3 million followers on TikTok, credits the app for providing him with a career and a means to support himself. “For me, it’s my career now, so I couldn’t imagine it not being around,” he said. His sentiments are echoed by other creators, including Adam W., a comedy creator with 22.6 million followers, who called the news of TikTok’s new ownership “game-changing.” Adam W.’s videos, which parody pop culture trends, have amassed a massive audience and have become a staple of the platform.

A New Era for TikTok

The recent deal, which allows TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. through a joint venture controlled by a group of U.S. investors, including tech giant Oracle Corp., has brought a sense of relief to the creator community. The news was announced just minutes before the start of TikTok’s inaugural American awards show, where hundreds of creators had gathered to celebrate their achievements. Kim Farrell, the app’s global head of creators, emphasized the importance of the creator community, stating, “You represent a truly global community of over 1 billion people on TikTok.”

Despite some technical glitches during the awards show, the event was a resounding success, featuring a range of skits parodying TikTok cultural moments. The show was a testament to the platform’s ability to shape the way younger Americans shop and consume entertainment. Max Willens, an analyst at EMarketer, believes that the new ownership of TikTok will allow the app to rebound after it lost market share amid uncertainty over its future.

A Bright Future Ahead

The creator community is optimistic about the future of TikTok, with many relying on the app as a key source of income. Businesses and brands also turn to the platform and its influencers to promote their products. As Lee said, “TikTok definitely changed my life. I always planned my life around food, so I’m blessed to just turn the camera on and do the same thing.” With its new ownership, TikTok is poised to continue its growth and provide a platform for creators to thrive.
