Tragic Accident: Co-Owner of Tinucci’s Restaurant Charged with Criminal Vehicular Operation

A devastating incident occurred on August 16 in Newport, where a cyclist was struck by an SUV driven by Mark Thomas Tinucci Sr., a 70-year-old co-owner of the long-standing Tinucci’s Restaurant in Cottage Grove. The victim suffered severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, eight broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and a cracked carotid artery. According to the complaint, the cyclist “has no signs of cognitive skills at this point.”

Charges and Investigation

Tinucci was charged with Criminal Vehicular Operation in connection with the crash, which occurred on Maxwell Avenue under Interstate 494 in Newport. Witnesses reported that the cyclist was struck by the SUV, which had a “Tinucci’s” sticker on the side, while riding through a crosswalk. The driver, identified as Tinucci, allegedly did not stop and instead left the scene, stating “I didn’t see him” before departing.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the report and found the victim near his bike on the street. They later located the suspect’s SUV at Tinucci’s Restaurant, which had fresh damage to the front end. Employees at the restaurant informed the deputies that Tinucci had driven the SUV earlier that day.

Restaurant’s Response and Tinucci’s Statement

A spokesperson for Tinucci’s Restaurant released a statement, acknowledging the allegations against Tinucci and expressing their cooperation with law enforcement. The statement read, “We recognize the seriousness of this situation and our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected, especially the person who was injured and their family.” Tinucci himself told deputies that he was sorry and knew it was wrong to leave the scene, but claimed he had not seen the cyclist and panicked after realizing what had happened.

Tinucci is scheduled to appear in court on October 1. A message was left for him to seek a statement on the allegations, but a defender is not listed in the court file. The incident has raised concerns about the importance of driver awareness and responsibility, especially when it comes to vulnerable road users like cyclists.
