President Trump’s Quest for a U.S.-China Trade Deal
President Trump has expressed his hopes of securing a trade deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting in South Korea. The president made these remarks while addressing the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, as part of his nearly week-long trip to Asia. Trump’s trip has primarily focused on strengthening trade agreements and boosting economic ties with U.S. partners in the region.
The meeting between Trump and Xi is highly anticipated, given the ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. The U.S. has been pressing China to relax its export restrictions on rare earth elements, which are crucial for various industries, including computer chips and aerospace. The U.S. has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods starting Saturday if Beijing fails to comply. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these additional tariffs are “effectively off the table” after a two-day meeting with a Chinese negotiator.
Trade War and Its Implications
The trade war between the U.S. and China has led to China cutting off purchases of U.S. soybeans, causing difficulties for American farmers. Nevertheless, Bessent expects the soybean boycott to end soon. Furthermore, Trump needs Chinese approval for a deal to transfer TikTok’s U.S. operations from its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance. The president has predicted that the two leaders will reach an agreement by the end of his trip, citing his respect for President Xi and his optimism about the negotiations.
Nicholas Burns, a former U.S. ambassador to China during the Biden era, emphasized the significance of the meeting between Trump and Xi, describing the trade war as a “test of wills” between the world’s two largest economies. Burns noted that China is the most important competitor and adversary of the United States, making the stakes high for the negotiations.
Trump’s Engagements in Asia
During his speech at the APEC event, Trump highlighted his plans to partner with other countries on key industries such as shipbuilding, semiconductors, and critical minerals. He framed the trade negotiations as an extension of the U.S.’s defense alliances in the region, stating that “economic security is national security.” The president also touted the other trade deals he has signed in Asia, including agreements with Japan, Malaysia, and several other countries.
Trump is seeking to finalize a trade agreement with South Korea, the United States’ sixth-largest trading partner. Although a framework deal was announced over the summer, Bessent stated that the South Korea deal is unlikely to be resolved this week. The president has also signed a trade deal with Japan, cementing 15% tariffs on imported Japanese goods, and announced trade frameworks with Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.
