Trump’s Decision to End Temporary Protective Status for Somali Migrants in Minnesota Sparks Controversy

President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to terminate temporary legal protections for Somali migrants living in Minnesota has sparked widespread concern and criticism from immigrant advocacy groups. The decision, which affects a relatively small number of people – approximately 705 nationwide, according to a Congressional report – has been met with strong opposition from the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN).

Impact on Somali Community in Minnesota

Minnesota is home to the largest Somali community in the United States, with many having fled the long civil war in their east African country and settled in the state due to its welcoming social programs. Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR-MN, expressed deep disappointment and concern over the decision, stating that it “will tear families apart” and send individuals back to a country they have not known for over 20 years.

Hussein also criticized the decision as a “political attack on the Somali and Muslim community driven by Islamophobic and hateful rhetoric.” The CAIR-MN has urged President Trump to reverse his decision, citing the devastating impact it will have on families and individuals who have built their lives in Minnesota.

Temporary Protective Status Program

The Temporary Protective Status (TPS) program was established by Congress in 1990 to prevent deportations of people to countries suffering from natural disasters, civil strife, or other dangerous conditions. The designation can be granted by the Homeland Security secretary and is typically granted in 18-month increments. The program has been used to protect immigrants from various countries, including Somalia, Venezuela, Haiti, and Syria.

President Trump’s decision to end TPS for Somali migrants in Minnesota is part of a broader push to adopt hardline immigration policies. The Trump administration has previously moved to withdraw protections for 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians, and has sought to limit protections for migrants from Cuba and Syria.
