The Unseen Reality of Tulsa Remote: A Cautionary Tale for Remote Workers

Tulsa Remote, a program designed to lure remote workers from coastal hubs with cash and charm, has become a national success story. The program offers remote workers $10,000 to relocate, with the intention of bringing in new talent, new incomes, and glowing headlines. However, beneath the slogans and promotional materials lies a different reality that residents like me live with every day.

As a biotech professional, I was drawn to Tulsa Remote’s promise of a new beginning. I bought a house in July 2021, during the nationwide price surge, but well before the peak. I’ve since built positive equity thanks in part to a comfortable mortgage rate at 3.75%. However, I soon realized that the supposed advantage of owning a home in Tulsa comes with significant drawbacks. The low mortgage rate makes leaving Tulsa impractical and irrational, as giving up that rate likely means never owning again.

The Hidden Costs of Owning a Home in Tulsa

The costs of owning a home in Tulsa are not limited to the mortgage payment. Homeowners are required to over-insure their properties due to the high risk of severe weather, which can lead to costly insurance premiums. My homeowner’s policy doubles my mortgage payment, even before property taxes. Factor in an average 1% to 5% wind and hail deductible, and the costs of keeping a “cheap house” standing can be overwhelming.

Additionally, the $10,000 grant offered by Tulsa Remote is taxable income, which didn’t cover the cost of relocation, much less contribute to a down payment. The program’s self-promoted success stories about retention are misleading, as they fail to account for those who cannot afford to leave due to the mortgage lock and other financial burdens.

Professional Opportunities and Challenges

Professionally, Tulsa has been an anchor. Despite bringing real biotech credentials with me, including quality assurance and regulatory and project management skills, I’ve found that having Tulsa on my résumé is a liability for remote work. Companies outside of Oklahoma see a red flag of irrelevance, and local jobs often require specific experience that I don’t possess. The perception of my degrees and certifications has diminished, making it challenging to find employment that matches my skills and experience.

The city’s violent crime rate, which puts the odds of becoming a victim at around 1-in-110, is another concern that affects not only personal safety but also insurance premiums, property values, and the overall quality of life. The narrative that newcomers will be embraced for bringing money, talent, and opportunity is not entirely accurate, as outsiders are often seen as intruders, even when their income helps sustain the city’s growth.

A Deeper Look at Tulsa’s Structural Obstacles

Tulsa Remote’s promotional materials carefully erase the context of the city’s complex history and structural obstacles. The program brings people and resources, but it does not address the deeper issues that affect the city’s development, such as education systems and attainment gaps, public health burdens, industrial contamination, and superfund site designations. These challenges complicate development and pose continued risk, making it essential to consider them when evaluating the program’s success.

In conclusion, while Tulsa Remote may have brought money, attention, and a narrative of revival to the city, it is essential to look beyond the headlines and consider the experiences of those who have relocated. The program’s success is not solely measured by retention rates, but also by the quality of life and opportunities available to its participants. As a biotech professional and culture writer, I hope to provide a more nuanced understanding of the program’s impact and the challenges that come with relocating to Tulsa.
