Verizon Network Outage: Thousands of Customers Affected Across the US

A significant network outage has affected Verizon customers across the United States, with many reporting issues with their cellphones and some being limited to SOS mode for several hours. The outage, which began shortly after 12 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, has caused widespread disruptions, with customers taking to social media to express their frustration and concern.

According to data from DownDetector, a website that tracks service outages for telecommunications providers, the number of reports peaked around 3:30 p.m. ET, with nearly 23,000 reports. The outages were reported from California to Florida, indicating a widespread issue with the Verizon network. Verizon has acknowledged the issue, stating that it is aware of a “software issue impacting wireless service for some customers” and is working to resolve the problem.

Impact on Customers and Services

Many customers have reported that their phones have been limited to SOS mode, which allows for emergency calls to be made, such as 911, by connecting to other carriers. This has caused significant disruptions to daily life, with many relying on their phones for work, communication, and other essential activities. One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, told CBS News that “Verizon is making it seem as if only ‘some customers are affected.’ That’s not true… All my L.A. friends, who have Verizon, don’t have service either.”

The outage has also raised concerns about the reliability of the Verizon network, particularly given that the company experienced a similar outage in October 2024, which resulted in over 100,000 reports on DownDetector. Verizon has apologized for the inconvenience and appreciates customers’ patience as it works to resolve the issue.

Resolution Efforts and Updates

Verizon has stated that its engineers are engaged and working quickly to identify and solve the issue. The company has also advised customers to visit its Check Network Status page for updates on service in their area. In a later update, Verizon announced that it was “starting to see service restoration in impacted areas,” providing some relief to affected customers.

As the situation continues to unfold, customers are advised to stay informed through official channels and to report any ongoing issues to Verizon. For more information and updates on the outage, customers can visit the Verizon outage report on CBS News.
