Washington County Father Pleads Guilty to Child Endangerment After UTV Crash
A devastating incident in Washington County has led to a father’s guilty plea in connection with a utility vehicle rollover crash that left a young boy seriously injured. The accident occurred on January 6, 2024, when a 6-year-old boy, who was driving a Polaris Ranger 500 utility vehicle, lost control, causing the vehicle to roll onto its right side and pin another young boy underneath.
According to authorities, the boy who was driving the vehicle was not supervised by an adult, despite being underage to operate the vehicle. The father, Samuel Kelley, admitted to allowing his son to drive the vehicle, knowing the age restrictions. He also helped the boys get ready to ride, buckling their helmets beforehand.
Incident Details
The incident occurred in the 9000 block of Lansing Avenue North near Grant, where the Kelley family resides. The boy who was pinned underneath the vehicle was found unconscious and seriously injured, with a bruised lung, broken leg, and was put into a medically induced coma. He was discharged from the hospital on January 15, 2024.
Both parents, Samuel and Katie Kelley, were charged with one felony count of child endangerment in Washington County District Court. However, on Wednesday, Samuel Kelley pleaded guilty to the charge, taking responsibility for the incident. He stated, “I let my son operate an ATV with two other kids with him, that he shouldn’t have been operating due to his age.”
Consequences and Sentencing
Kelley’s guilty plea has led to a pre-sentence investigation, which will be followed by official sentencing on February 24. He could face up to three years of probation, complete an ATV safety course, and perform 100 hours of community service. The incident highlights the importance of adult supervision and adherence to age restrictions when operating vehicles, especially those that can cause serious harm.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other authorities have emphasized the need for responsible behavior and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent such incidents. As the case comes to a close, it serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing child safety and well-being.
