Democratic Governors Form Alliance to Counter Trump Administration’s Vaccine Policies

The Democratic governors of Washington, Oregon, and California have announced the formation of an alliance to establish their own recommendations for vaccine distribution, citing concerns that the Trump administration is politicizing the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This move comes as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, and the administration’s handling of the pandemic has been met with criticism from health experts.

Concerns Over Politicization of the CDC

The governors’ decision to form an alliance is driven by concerns that the Trump administration is compromising the CDC’s ability to provide science-based guidance on vaccine distribution. The administration’s restructuring and downsizing of the CDC, as well as its attempts to advance anti-vaccine policies, have been widely criticized by health experts. According to California State Health Officer Erica Pan, “The dismantling of public health and dismissal of experienced and respected health leaders and advisers, along with the lack of using science, data, and evidence to improve our nation’s health, are placing lives at risk.”

A Partnership for Expert Medical Advice

The West Coast Vaccine Alliance aims to coordinate vaccine recommendations and immunization plans based on science-based evidence from respected national medical organizations. The alliance will provide a framework for the three states to work together to ensure that their citizens have access to accurate and reliable information about vaccines. As Oregon Health Director Sejal Hathi noted, “Vaccines are among the most powerful tools in modern medicine; they have indisputably saved millions of lives. But when guidance about their use becomes inconsistent or politicized, it undermines public trust at precisely the moment we need it most.”

Public Health Agencies Take Action

Meanwhile, public health agencies across the country are taking steps to ensure that their states have access to vaccines. Illinois, for example, is seeking advice from medical experts and its own Immunization Advisory Committee on COVID-19 vaccines and other immunizations for the fall respiratory season. New Mexico is updating its protocols to allow pharmacists to consider recommendations from the state’s health department when administering vaccines. These efforts demonstrate a growing trend of states taking proactive measures to protect public health, despite the challenges posed by the Trump administration’s policies.

A History of State-Led Initiatives

The West Coast Vaccine Alliance is not the first time Democratic-led states have banded together to coordinate policies related to public health. During the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, states formed regional alliances to gain buying power for personal protective equipment and to coordinate reopening their economies. These initiatives demonstrate the ability of states to work together to address public health challenges, even in the face of federal inaction or opposition.
