Wayward Sea Lion Causes Traffic Jam in Washington Town
A surprising sight greeted residents of Cosmopolis, Washington, when a sea lion wandered onto a public roadway, causing a minor traffic jam. The incident occurred on Blue Slough Road, near the Chehalis River, which flows into an estuary of the Pacific Ocean.
The sea lion’s unexpected appearance on the road was likely due to the powerful atmospheric river that soaked the Northwest, according to the Cosmopolis Police Department. Chief of Police Heath Layman, who has 30 years of experience with the department, stated that he has never seen a sea lion venture onto the roadway, which is approximately 200 yards from the river.
Rescue Efforts and Sea Lion Relocation
The Cosmopolis Police Department responded to the unusual call and worked with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to safely relocate the sea lion back to the river.
The sea lion’s relocation was successful, and it was returned to its natural habitat.

According to Chief Layman, sea lions have been increasingly present in the river over the past few years, although they are typically found chasing salmon, not lounging on public roadways. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts and the need to protect marine wildlife and their habitats.
