Wolfgang Van Halen Speaks Out on the “Nepo Baby” Label
Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of the late rock legend Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli, has shared his thoughts on the term “nepo baby” in a recent interview with Metal Hammer. The term, which refers to the children of famous actors, singers, models, and entrepreneurs who benefit from their family’s connections and power, has been a topic of discussion in the entertainment industry.
A Bit Unfair
Wolfgang, 34, believes that the label is “a bit unfair” as it takes away the individuality of the person. He joined his father’s rock band Van Halen at the age of 15, replacing Michael Anthony as the band’s bassist, and toured with them from 2006 until 2020. The band disbanded after Eddie’s death in 2020 at the age of 65 following his battle with throat cancer.
Wolfgang also mentioned Jack Quaid, the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, while discussing nepotism. “People say Jack Quaid is one of the ‘good ones,’ and it’s like, who decides that?” he asked. Jack Quaid, 33, has made a name for himself in the acting world, starring in films and TV shows such as “The Hunger Games,” “The Boys,” and “Scream.”
Artistic Integrity
Wolfgang emphasized the importance of having artistic integrity and his own voice. “All I’m trying to do is be myself and have my own artistic integrity and my own voice. I hope that people can see that,” he said. He has been working on his own music, releasing his debut solo album “Mammoth WVH” under the band name Mammoth, and has toured extensively. His song “Distance” from the album was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 2022.
Wolfgang has also been open about his late father’s passing, saying that it’s not getting any easier. “We’re coming up on the four-year-anniversary of his passing and it’s not any easier,” he said in an interview on Billy Corgan’s podcast “The Magnificent Others.” He also spoke about how his father’s pride in him has left a void that he still feels today.
