Box Office Success: “Zootopia 2” Leads the Pack
The Thanksgiving weekend proved to be a lucrative time for family-friendly films, with the animated movie “Zootopia 2” hopping to the top of the box office. The sequel to the 2016 film from Walt Disney Co. raked in an impressive $156 million in the U.S. and Canada over the five-day weekend, according to studio estimates. This significant haul is a testament to the enduring popularity of the franchise, which has clearly resonated with audiences.
A Global Phenomenon
Globally, “Zootopia 2” collected a staggering $556 million in box office revenue, with $272 million of that coming from China. This marks the highest opening ever for a nonlocal animated movie in the country, a notable achievement given the recent cooling of the Chinese market for Hollywood films. The movie’s success in China can be attributed, in part, to Disney’s strategic marketing efforts, including the opening of a “Zootopia”-themed land at Shanghai Disneyland in 2023. The original film had also performed well in China, with a total box office haul of $236 million.
Family-Friendly Films Reign Supreme
The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas has traditionally been a crucial time for studios and theaters to attract moviegoers with family-friendly fare or blockbusters. This year is no exception, with “Zootopia 2” and Universal Pictures’ “Wicked: For Good” leading the charge. The latter film came in second at the domestic box office, with a five-day total of $93 million. These films, along with Disney’s upcoming “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” are expected to drive significant ticket sales in the coming weeks.
A Year of Ups and Downs
Despite an uneven year at the box office, films geared toward children and families have largely performed well. Disney’s live-action adaptation “Lilo & Stitch” brought in over $1 billion in global box office revenue, while Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” earned nearly $958 million. These successes demonstrate the ongoing demand for family-friendly content, a trend that “Zootopia 2” and “Wicked: For Good” are well-positioned to capitalize on.
