Northern California Floods: Swift-Water Rescue Teams Save Families and Livestock

Swift-water rescue teams were deployed to Humboldt County in Northern California on Sunday as a powerful atmospheric river slammed the region with heavy rain and caused significant flooding. The rescue efforts helped save families and even livestock, with video footage showing deputies on jet skis and boats reaching flooded homes in the Bayside, Freshwater, and several other communities.

Flooding and Rescue Efforts

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office released images of goats and sheep that had to be rescued from the front porch of a home, surrounded by floodwaters. Other images showed deputies wading through chest-high water, highlighting the severity of the flooding. The sheriff’s office also posted video footage of the rescue efforts, which can be seen on their Facebook page.

Impact and Forecast

Many state and local roads were still flooded Monday morning, with the county releasing a list of businesses where sandbags were being staged. The heavy rain caused many rivers and creeks in the county to overflow their banks, with flooding reported throughout Northern California over the weekend. Nearly a foot of rain fell in some places, and the powerful atmospheric river is expected to remain over the region through Monday.
