Clive Davis: A Legendary Music Executive Passes Away at 94
Clive Davis, a renowned music executive who played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous iconic artists, including Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, and Whitney Houston, has passed away at the age of 94. According to his publicist, Davis died peacefully at his Manhattan home on Monday, surrounded by his loved ones, due to age-related illnesses.
Davis was a five-time Grammy Award winner who left an indelible mark on the music industry, working with artists across various genres such as R&B, jazz, rock, country, and hip-hop. His family remembered him as a “steady presence” and a “source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love.” They also acknowledged his professional accomplishments, stating that he “discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.”
Early Life and Career
Born in Brooklyn in 1932, Davis lost his parents at a young age and learned the importance of hard work to achieve his goals. He graduated from New York University and Harvard Law School, initially pursuing a career in law before being recruited as the chief lawyer for Columbia Records. Davis later became the head of Columbia Records in 1967, despite having no formal training in music.
In an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” in 2011, Davis reflected on his early life, saying, “There was no substitute for hard work. You had to earn it. I earned every scholarship that I had to get me through law school as well as college.” He also spoke with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King in 2022, discussing his transition from law to the music industry, stating, “I was plucked out of a law firm to become chief lawyer for Columbia Records three years out of law school. I did that for five years.”
A Legacy of Musical Excellence
Davis was widely credited as one of the greatest hit-makers in the music industry, signing legendary artists such as Simon and Garfunkel, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, and Earth Wind and Fire. He also worked with notable artists like Notorious B.I.G., Alicia Keys, Luther Vandross, and Rod Stewart. Davis recalled his experience with Simon and Garfunkel, saying, “I do know when I hear a hit song. And so Simon and Garfunkel, [I’ll] never forget that when they played me ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ I said, ‘That has gotta be the first single,'” adding that it was “so classic” and his favorite song.
Narada Michael Walden, a singer-songwriter and music producer who worked with Whitney Houston, remembered Davis as a perfectionist with a passion for music. Walden stated, “[Davis] was a perfectionist and very giving of nature to open the doors to people like myself who also love music and want to really bring music up.” He also noted that Davis had a unique ability to envision hit songs, saying, “He loved to, I will say, to meditate. Close his eyes and just envision what will be a hit around the world. He had a gift for that … He was really in touch and excited like a kid to bring new music to the world.”
A Lasting Impact on the Music Industry
Davis faced challenges in his career, including being ousted from Columbia Records and facing tax evasion charges. However, he went on to found Arista Records, J Records, and later became the chairman of the RCA Music Group and worldwide chief creative officer at Sony Music Entertainment. According to his publicist, Davis was “one of music’s most prolific hitmakers, innovators and developers of artistic and executive talent ever, he was one of the record industry’s first and most impactful advocates for Black artists.”
Musician David Foster attributed Davis’ success to his artist-friendly approach, saying, “He’s completely artist-friendly and the artist always comes first.” Barry Manilow also praised Davis, stating that he was an inspiration to him and everyone in the music business.
