Winter Storms to Hit the Northeast: A Second System Brings Rain, Snow, and Arctic Air

With an active winter storm expected to hit the Northeast Friday night, a second system is close behind. This second storm will bring a mixture of rain and snow from Sunday into Monday and will be followed by a blast of Arctic air.

The Northeast is bracing for another winter storm, just days after a powerful system brought snow and ice to the region. The new system will bring a mix of rain and snow, followed by a blast of cold air that will leave most of the East Coast below average to start the New Year.

Second System to Bring Rain and Snow

According to weather forecasts, the second system will travel across Southern Canada into Sunday, bringing a long trailing cold front with it. Warm air will surge north due to the low-pressure system being further north in Canada, resulting in a mostly rain event for most of the East Coast, extending from Ohio through Tennessee from Sunday night into Monday morning.

FOX Weather forecast indicates that frozen precipitation will be located across far northern New England and in the higher terrain of the interior Northeast. Lighter amounts of snow are expected, but higher totals are predicted in the Catskills and Green/White Mountains.

Ice Potential and Snow Forecast

Icing will also be possible across northern New York into parts of Maine on Monday afternoon. The FOX Forecast Center reports that rain will start on Sunday across the eastern Great Lakes, with a front extending further into the Tennessee Valley. Some stronger storms are possible in both the Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys late Sunday afternoon, before rain sweeps across most of the I-95 corridor.

The post-holiday return-to-work commute on Monday can possibly be a wet one, with rain expected from Philadelphia to Boston. Following this system, a blast of much colder air will move in, with winds pivoting out of the Northwest, making way for potential lake-effect snow near Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Areas of Western New York, like Buffalo and Watertown, will see plowable snow into Tuesday of next week. For more information on the winter storms, visit Here
