Grand Marais Community Left Shaken After Unprovoked Stabbing at Local Co-op

GRAND MARAIS, Minn. — A sense of unease has settled over the small North Shore town of Grand Marais after a violent stabbing occurred at the local Cook County Co-op on Saturday afternoon. The incident has left residents and authorities alike searching for answers, as a 32-year-old employee of the co-op, Donovan Michael Vondall, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and other serious offenses.

According to the criminal complaint, Vondall is accused of slashing the neck of a customer, Thomas Wayne Peterson of St. Paul, in an unprovoked attack. Peterson reported that he noticed Vondall perspiring and looking at him in an agitated manner just before the incident. As he opened the door to a refrigerated case, Peterson felt a “sharp punch” on his right jaw and saw Vondall holding a knife.

Investigation and Arrest

Vondall allegedly told investigators that he had considered staying home that day because he felt like hurting someone. He also stated that he had not been taking his medication for schizophrenia, according to his grandmother. Vondall was arrested at his home without incident, and a black fold-out knife with a serrated edge was recovered at the residence.

Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen described the incident as a “horrific” act of violence that has left the community shaken. “This level of violence has a lot of people shaken up,” he said, noting that there is no further threat to public safety. Local author and freelance journalist Joe Friedrichs echoed Eliasen’s sentiments, stating that the attack has made people feel uneasy, particularly given the co-op’s role as a community hub.

Community Reaction and Support

The co-op has remained closed since the incident but is slated to reopen. The community is coming together to support the victim and each other during this difficult time. As the investigation continues, residents are left to grapple with the aftermath of the stabbing and the questions it raises about mental health, community safety, and the complexities of human behavior.
