Isiah Whitlock Jr., a talented actor known for his iconic roles in “The Wire,” “Veep,” and several Spike Lee movies, has passed away at the age of 71, as confirmed by his manager, Brian Liebman, to CBS News. Born in Indiana in 1954, Whitlock attended Southwest Minnesota State University and later joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. His first movie appearance was in the 1981 TV movie version of “A Christmas Carol.” Whitlock’s breakthrough role came when he played state Sen. R. Clayton “Clay” Davis on HBO’s critically acclaimed series “The Wire,” appearing in all five seasons. He also had a recurring role as Defense Secretary George Maddox in the HBO comedy “Veep” and collaborated with Spike Lee on several films, including “25th Hour,” “She Hate Me,” and “BlacKkKlansman.”

Whitlock’s impressive filmography also includes roles in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” “Pieces of April,” “Enchanted,” and Pixar’s “Cars 3” and “Lightyear.” He was set to voice a character in Pixar’s upcoming animated sci-fi comedy “Hoppers,” scheduled for release in 2026. Spike Lee, who worked with Whitlock on several projects, paid tribute to the actor on Instagram, writing, “Today I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother ISIAH WHITLOCK. GOD BLESS.”
