In an effort to provide some relief, nearly two dozen states are raising their minimum wage in 2026, according to a recent report from the National Employment Law Project (NELP), a renowned advocacy organization for workers. States Raising Minimum Wage in 2026
A total of 88 jurisdictions, including 22 states and 66 cities and counties, are slated to increase their minimum wages at some point in 2026. The bulk of these changes took effect on January 1, 2026, with some notable increases including New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County, where the minimum wage rose to $17.00 per hour. Other states, such as California and Washington, will also see significant increases, with minimum wages reaching $16.90 and $17.13 per hour, respectively.

The following states will see minimum wage increases in 2026: Arizona ($15.15), California ($16.90), Colorado ($15.16), Connecticut ($16.94), Hawaii ($16), Maine ($15.10), Michigan ($13.73), Minnesota ($11.41), Missouri ($15), Montana ($10.85), Nebraska ($15), New Jersey ($15.92), New York ($17.00 for New York City, Long Island, and Westchester; $16.00 for the rest of the state), Ohio ($11), Rhode Island ($16), South Dakota ($11.85), Vermont ($14.42), Virginia ($12.77), and Washington State ($17.13). Some states, such as Alaska, Florida, and Oregon, will see increases later in 2026.
States Not Raising Minimum Wage
Some states, such as Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, and West Virginia, have a minimum wage above $7.25 but will not increase it in 2026. The remaining states, including Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, have a minimum wage of $7.25 or lower.
