Gophers Add Experienced Kicker to Roster
Former Michigan kicker Beckham Sunderland has committed to the University of Minnesota Gophers, bringing a wealth of experience to the team. Sunderland, a kickoff specialist for the Wolverines last season, successfully achieved 44 touchbacks in 71 attempts, showcasing his impressive skills in this area. Notably, he did not attempt any field goals during his time with Michigan.
Before joining the Gophers, Sunderland spent the 2024 season at Texas State, where he made one extra point try, further demonstrating his kicking abilities. Interestingly, Sunderland’s athletic career began as a soccer goalkeeper, and he was the first homegrown player signing for MLS club FC Cincinnati in 2020. Although he played for their youth sides, he did not participate with the first team.
Competition for Kicking Duties
With last year’s Gophers kicker, Brady Denaburg, no longer on the team, Sunderland will compete with redshirt freshman Daniel Jackson and other players for kicking duties next season. This competition is expected to bring out the best in each athlete, ultimately benefiting the team. As the 10th addition to the Gophers transfer portal class since Friday, Sunderland’s commitment is a significant one, highlighting the team’s efforts to strengthen their roster.
Sunderland’s background and experience make him a valuable asset to the Gophers. His ability to perform under pressure and his familiarity with high-level competition will undoubtedly contribute to the team’s success.
