Tribute to a Fallen Hero: Jett, the Former St. Paul Police Horse
In a heart-wrenching loss, Jett, a retired St. Paul police horse, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and service. According to his owner, Jen Mink, a former St. Paul police officer, Jett fought hard until the end, but his passing was unexpected and heartbreaking.
Mink, who was partnered with Jett for about four years, described him as a courageous and brave horse who lived an honorable life. After retiring from duty in 2018, Jett continued to serve and help others, earning a special place in the hearts of those who knew him. Mink said, “If Jett was a person, he would be receiving a funeral or service with honors. I know it probably sounds silly, but to me, he would have given his life to help others.”
A Life of Service and Bravery
Jett, an appendix quarter horse, was estimated to be in his late 20s, which is considered old for a horse. Despite his age, he remained strong and dedicated to his work. Mink, who now teaches basic horsemanship skills to children and adults with three other retired St. Paul police horses, including Moose, her partner after Jett, said that Jett’s passing has left a void in her life. She is now planning a memorial service to honor his law enforcement service and is having him cremated.
In mid-December, Jett was battling a fever and had been eating and drinking minimally. Mink created a GoFundMe page to help with veterinary expenses, and the public’s response was overwhelming. Although Jett’s death was unrelated to the virus he had overcome, Mink is grateful for the support and knows that everything possible was done to prolong his life. She said, “My heart hurts so bad right now … but I have moments of comfort, knowing there was nothing left for me or the vet to do.”
A Lasting Legacy
Jett’s story is a testament to the bravery and dedication of police horses and their handlers. As Mink said, “He had a big blue heart. And now he is gone, like he and his life weren’t a big deal.” However, Jett’s life was a big deal, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the people he helped.
