ICE Actions in Minnesota: Child Care Providers Speak Out Against Trauma and Disruption

With U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations on the rise in Minnesota, child care providers are sounding the alarm about the devastating impact on their young students. The killing of Minneapolis resident Renee Good has further exacerbated the situation, leaving many to wonder about the safety and well-being of children in the community. As shows, the effects of ICE actions are being felt deeply.

Disruptions to Learning and Nurturing

State Rep. Samantha Sencer-Mura, DFL-63A and a member of the House Children and Families Committee, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are all used to in Minnesota snow days, but we are now having ICE days, meaning that our kids are not able to learn, they are having their education cut because of ICE actions in our community.” This sentiment was echoed by other child care providers, who shared concerns about the trauma and fear that ICE operations are instilling in their students.

At a press conference hosted by multifaith nonprofit ISAIAH at Christ Church Lutheran in Minneapolis, speakers criticized the Trump Administration for attempting to freeze state child care funding and local Republicans for inviting YouTuber Nick Shirley to create a video portraying alleged child care fraud in the state. They argued that Shirley’s video has inspired harassment of schools and immigrant communities, further destabilizing the environment for children.

Impact on Child Care Facilities and Communities

Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn, DFL-49B and chair of the Children and Families Committee, emphasized that the situation is not just about policy disagreements, but about the real-life consequences of ICE actions. “Now American citizens are being killed in broad daylight and students are being tackled after school. None of this is about public safety anymore. In fact, ICE is destabilizing our communities and making us all less safe,” she said. Child care providers shared stories of workers being detained on their way to work, and the need to develop new protocols for responding to ICE agents arriving at their facilities.

The trauma and fear caused by ICE operations are taking a toll on children, with many experiencing anxiety and stress as a result of the actions. As Sencer-Mura noted, “Just hours after (Good) was killed on Wednesday, and just a few miles away, we saw ICE not take a beat, not rest, and instead go to our local high school (Roosevelt) and terrorize students, parents and community members at dismissal… They are traumatizing our kids.”

A Call for Change

Despite the Trump Administration’s claims that the deployment of immigration officers is necessary to combat crime and illegal immigration, many argue that the actions are having the opposite effect. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the administration will “redouble our efforts to get the worst of the worst criminal, illegal alien killers, rapists and pedophiles off of American streets.” However, child care providers and community leaders are calling for a different approach, one that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all community members, including children.
